Restoring Character. Preserving Craftsmanship.

Working photographs from a sandstone masonry project, grouped by what each one shows — the condition of the stone, the repairs in progress and the finished detail.

Specialist Stonework

Repairs worked by hand into the existing masonry

Damaged stone is cut back and repaired so the new work sits with the original masonry, rather than covering it up. Each repair is shaped to the stone around it.

01

Existing Stone Condition

Weathered corners and surface loss where the sandstone had deteriorated over time.

02

Masonry Restoration in Progress

Stone repairs under way, worked carefully into the existing masonry.

Meet John — Rees Restoration

Hi, I'm John, and I run Rees Restoration, based in Kilmarnock.

I've always had a real passion for traditional stonework, particularly restoring sandstone buildings and bringing their original character back to life.

Whether it's repairing damaged masonry, restoring original stone features or working on older properties, I take pride in doing the job properly and paying attention to the finer details.

I believe in keeping customers informed throughout the work, being straightforward about what's involved and treating every property with care.

“Amazing transformation by John and his team who removed all the paint from my sandstone house while totally restoring it and finishing it to a very high standard. I am delighted with the results and have had many compliments even from passers by. Great to have a tradesman who is so passionate about his trade.”

“When John first came to look at the job for me it was clear that he’s really passionate about working with stone. The quote for repairs to our chimney and some of the gable end stonework was very reasonable, and the work that he’s done is quality. Will definitely look to do a bit more in the future. Thanks”

“restore red sandstone”

“John Rees has been excellent throughout. He restored red sandstone to my son's ground floor flat and it looks amazing. He stayed in contact with us almost every day to inform us of progress and what was going to happen next. We knew when he was going to be there and when he couldn't make it because of the weather. Will definitely use him again.”
